We’re excited to introduce a new, talented group of Student Athletes of the Week! These four incredible young people have shown dedication and drive, as well as outstanding work ethics, to succeed in their chosen sports. We’re proud to recognize them this week:
Knoxville Catholic High School: Handje Tamba Year: Junior
Sport: Basketball
Stats: Tamba scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked 6 shots in a “region clinching” overtime win over McCallie School. The 7-foot junior, who carries a GPA of 4.2, was a force in the paint despite being matched up against a taller and much heavier man most of the night. His shot block in the closing seconds allowed the Irish to get possession of the ball and force the game into overtime, which they ultimately won.
Knoxville Catholic High School: Jazmin Williams
Year: Sophomore
Sport: Basketball
Stats: Jaz is the floor general for the Lady Irish. She was pivotal in two big wins last week. Against division opponent Chattanooga Christian, Jaz scored 9 points, had 7 rebounds and 4 assists. She then followed that up a day later with 5 points, an assist and 7 rebounds against perennial power Oak Ridge.
Farragut High School: Connor Lyons
Year: Freshman
Sport: Wrestling
Stats: On Saturday, Connor placed 2nd in the 126-pound weight class at the TSSAA East Region Tournament at Farragut High School, qualifying him for the State Tournament this weekend!
Farragut High School: Makena Porter
Year: Freshman
Sport: Wrestling
Stats: At the TSSAA State Duals Tournament on Saturday, Makena won both of her matches by pinfall, defeating opponents from Union County and eventual State Champion Clarksville.
Well done, athletes! We love seeing the way local students positively impact their communities through their love of sports, and we look forward to recognizing new Student Athletes of the Week throughout the school year.
